2 Steps to a Simpler, Cheaper Move

September 8, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

blue bulbWhere would you rank moving on a stress level from 1 – 10? We all know it’s probably higher than 6, but did you know a study completed by the communications company at AT&T showed that stress levels from relocating were higher than changing jobs, getting married or a having a baby?

While nothing can de-stress the process completely, here are 2 easy steps you can follow to have a more simple, more affordable move:

1) Don’t Move Everything

This is actually alot more fun than it sounds. Think about it: The less “stuff” you pack, the less stuff you have to unpack and the less moving equipment you have to buy/rent. So be brutal with your packing decisions. Go through a fierce organization process and place items into one of the following categories:

Trash Or Recycle: Items that no longer serve a purpose for you or anyone else. For example: unmatched containers and lids, unread newspapers, anything gathering dust, clothing that no longer fits, etc.

Returns: Things borrowed that need to be given back. This also includes anything you are storing for someone else, like one of your adult children who has left stuff from their growing up years.

Sell: Why not make some money to fund part of your moving expenses? Plan a yard sale to get rid of excess items that are still in working condition. You can even find a consignment shop, or sell stuff on eBay or Craigs list.

2) Practice Smart Packing

Don’t spend money on fancy packing materials. Save money by using your sheets, towels, clothing, pillows, etc. Also find uses for empty cartons such as laundry baskets, garbage cans, suitcases etc instead of packing them away.

However, be careful with electronics and other items in need of special protection. Clearly mark any of your electronic boxes with “fragile”, and “this way up.”
